Weld Joint Design

A good joint design is key for strong hotplate welding. When optimized, the weld can be as strong as the original material. Follow these examples to design your weld joint correctly.

Unwelded Components

A well-designed joint includes extramaterial for melting (red) and sealing(gold) in the welding cycle.

Welded Assembly

After welding, the extra material known as flash, extrudes from the joint sides.

Overlap

In computer modeling (CAD), components should overlap to accommodate material displacement during welding.

Tips:

* Avoid placing molding lines, gates, or ejector pins on weld ribs.

* Keep a small space of at least 1.52 mm around the weld rib for the welding tool.

* Check if you need more than 1.52 mm space based on how much the rib might push out plastic (flash) when welded.

Flash Trap Design

Tips:

* Make sure the flash trap is wider than half the width of the weld rib.

* The weld rib should be tall enough to prevent the sides of the flash trap from touching during sealing.
